Section 1
Hey you, pay attention! There was a farmhouse located in the countryside, very close to the main road. You might have even seen it before while passing by. In front of the farmhouse, there was a small garden with pretty wooden fences painted in different colors. Right next to the garden, there was a ditch, and on its fresh green bank, a little daisy was growing. The sun shone just as brightly on the little daisy as it did on the big, fancy flowers in the fancy gardens, and so the little daisy grew healthy and strong. One morning, the little daisy had fully bloomed, and its tiny white petals had spread out around the yellow center, just like the rays of the sun. The little daisy didn’t feel bad that no one noticed it in the grass and that it was a simple and unimportant flower. Instead, it was really happy and always faced the sun, looking up at the sky and listening to the beautiful song of the lark flying high above in the air.
The little daisy felt just as happy as if it was a really special day like a big holiday, but actually, it was just a regular old Monday. While all the children were sitting in school, learning their lessons, the little daisy sat on its thin green stem and learned a different kind of lesson. It learned from the sun and everything around it how wonderful and kind God is. The little daisy was so happy that it could hear the sweet and clear song of the lark, which expressed its own happy feelings too. The little daisy looked up to the bird that could fly and sing with a lot of respect, but it didn’t feel jealous at all. The little daisy thought to itself, “Even though I can’t fly or sing like the bird, I am still very lucky. The sun shines on me and the breeze from the forest tickles me. I am so rich!”
There were many big and beautiful flowers growing in the garden nearby, but the funny thing was that the fancier the flowers looked, the less sweet they smelled, and the prouder and snobbier they acted. The peonies tried to look bigger than the roses by puffing themselves up, but being bigger doesn’t mean you’re better! The tulips, on the other hand, had really pretty colors and they knew it. They stood up straight and tall like candles so that everyone could see them better. The proud flowers didn’t notice the little daisy at all, but the little daisy looked at them and thought, “Wow, they are so rich and beautiful! I’m sure that the pretty bird will come and visit them. I’m so grateful that I’m close by and can at least see all their amazing beauty.” Just as the little daisy was thinking about the pretty bird, the lark came flying down and chirped “Tweet.” But the lark didn’t go to visit the peonies or tulips, it flew down into the grass to see the poor little daisy. The little daisy was so happy and excited that it didn’t even know what to think anymore! The little bird hopped around the little daisy and sang, “Wow, the grass is so soft! And look at this pretty little flower with its golden center and silver dress, it’s growing here so beautifully.” The middle of the little daisy looked just like gold, and the small petals around it sparkled and shone like silver!
The little daisy was incredibly happy! No one can even imagine how happy it was! The little bird kissed the daisy with its beak, sang to it, and then flew back up into the big blue sky. The little daisy was so happy that it took more than fifteen minutes for it to calm down! It felt a little embarrassed, but mostly happy in its heart. It looked over to the other flowers in the garden, thinking that surely, they had seen the little bird singing to it and how much joy it brought the daisy. The other flowers must have understood how happy the daisy was! The tulips and peonies in the garden were not happy for the daisy. The tulips were stiff and had red faces because they were upset. The peonies were in a bad mood and if they could talk, they would have scolded the daisy. The small daisy could tell that the other flowers were unhappy and felt sorry for them.
Soon after, a girl entered the garden holding a sharp knife. She walked up to the tulips and started cutting them down, one by one. The daisy felt sad and exclaimed, “Oh no! That’s awful! Now the tulips are gone forever.”
The girl took the tulips away from the garden, but the daisy was happy it was a small flower and was left alone. When the sun went down, the daisy closed its petals and went to sleep. It had dreams about the sun and the little bird all night long.
